Every year countries around the world celebrates World Blood Donor Day on 14 June. The event serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood & to thank volunteers to selflessly participate in the event & give one of the precious gift to the needy one.
The World Health Organization initiated & declared June 14,the birth anniversary of Karl Landsteiner, as a World blood Donor in 2004.
The day also provides an opportunity to call to action national authorities & government to provide adequate resources to increase the collection of blood from voluntary, unpaid blood donors.
Blood & blood products are essential resources for effective management of women suffering from bleeding associated with childbirth & pregnancy, children suffering from severe anemia due to malnutrition & malaria , patients with blood & bone marrow disorders, inherited disorder of hemoglobin & immune deficiency.
